You're getting ready to go to the beach, so you decide to whet your appetite for your wet vacation by renting the perfect ocean movie. And what could be better than the 30th anniversary edition DVD of Of course I'm kidding. I mean, why would you travel all the way to the hot, sandy, salty shore when you have a TV, a DVD player and AC at home? Besides, nothing says summer like director Steven Spielberg's terrifying treat.

People who started going to movies after 1975 take for granted that summer is the season for blockbusters, especially special-effects-laden action extravaganzas. "Jaws" which debuted on June 20, 1975, kept people away from the beach in droves and became the first movie to pass the $100 million mark launched that pattern. Spielberg has practically owned summer ever since with such hits as "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Jurassic Park," "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," "Saving Private Ryan," "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" and "Minority Report." Adjusted for inflation, "E.T." is No.

4 and "Jaws" is No. 7 in all-time top domestic grosses, according to figures found at www.boxofficemojo.com. This summer, the director is hoping for another winner with "War of the Worlds," which reteams him with "Minority Report" star Tom Cruise. It opens June 29. As you can hear in "The Making of Jaws," the excellent two-hour documentary on the 30th anniversary DVD's second disc, there were times during the production of "Jaws" that Spielberg feared he wouldn't have a career thanks to an ornery rubber shark and other problems.

Shooting on the water at Martha's Vineyard was an excruciating process. Every shot JAWS 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION' DVD I I Rated: PG Length: 124 minutes Rating: (film). (extras). TRAILER, RATE IT 1 Check out the trailer and rate the movie at KnoxNews.com ing as the film. There's no director's commentary, but there is a brief onset interview with the then-27year-old Spielberg and a lovely 58-page commemorative photo journal.

Outtakes, bloopers and examples of marketing materials are filler for diehard fans, who may already have them. The film itself holds up superbly. Martin Brody (Scheider), the new police chief on Amity Island, wants to close the beaches after a shark kills a blonde taking a late-night swim, but the town fathers protest because the local economy depends on summer tourist dollars. When the shark attacks a little boy as dozens of other swimmers frolic nearby in the water, everyone goes into a panic. Martin and shark expert Matt Hooper (Dreyfuss) join crusty fisherman Quint (Robert Shaw) on a perilous quest to kill the great white shark.

The film is as scary as ever, thanks to Alfred Hitchcock fan Spielberg's eye for suspense and Williams' unsettling score. It's a great example of what thrills can be accomplished with just a PG rating. With "Jaws," it's usually what you don't see that frightens you. For my money, this is the best way to have fun at the beach. A mechanical shark caused numerous problems for Roy Scheider, who played Chief Martin Brody, and the crew during the filming of "Jaws." took twice as long as expected.

Waves and wind forced constant re-setting of scenes. At times they'd have to wait 90 minutes for boats to cross the horizon and exit the background. Spielberg states that he thought the studio might replace him as the shoot went on and on. The horror stories on "Making" are hilarious and revealing. Laurent Bouzereau's 1995 doc, truncated on the 25th anniversary DVD, is the best reason to buy the new edition, now in stores.

Interviews with Spielberg, producers David Brown and Richard D. Zanuck, "Jaws" author Peter Benchley, actors Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary and victim No. 1 Susan Backlinie, cinematographer Bill Butler, live-shark photographers Ron and Valerie Taylor, composer John Williams and production designer Joe Alves bring the back story of "Jaws" to life and make the documentary almost as entertain- JUNE. 17, 2005 NEWS SENTINEL.
